Resource Annoucment | Standards of Practice to Support Victim-Survivors of Trafficking

The Standards of Practice to Support Victim-Survivors of Trafficking is a tool to provide insight to the unique needs of victim-survivors; to assist communities in developing an effective network of services for victim-survivors of human trafficking; to encourage continuous quality improvement in trafficking-specific services; and to ensure best practice standards of care are established in Nebraska and available to respond to the needs of victim-survivors. Victim-survivor services are those services and interventions offered to an individual victim-survivor to address expressed needs and concerns and promote healing and justice.

Included with these standards are two, ready to use, tools for service providers. The first is an emergency safety plan, designed for providers who may not have received formal training in safety planning. This will assist in identifying safe people, safe environments, as well as next steps in obtaining immediate resources. The second tool is a self-assessment guide to use as you ensure your services meet the presented standards and best practices. For additional assistance with utilizing these tools, please reach out to one of the NHTTF contacts listed on page 12 of the Standards of Practice.

This training will assist in understanding the social, political, and economic factors which sustain trafficking, will provide an in-depth review of the Standards of Practice, and will provide specific tools for safety planning and assessment of service delivery.

NIJ Study Finds Agencies Can React More Supportively Than Family and Friends to Victims’ Disclosures of Sexual Assault

The National Institute of Justice has published a studying finding that when a woman reports becoming a victim of sexual assault — formally, to law enforcement or a community service provider, or informally, to family, friends, or other intimates — the reaction itself, if negative, can cause further harm to the victim.

According to NIJ-supported research, victims reported receiving more negative reactions from informal supports (e.g., peers, family members) than they experienced when disclosing sexual assault to police or community-based service providers.

Understanding the dynamics of how people and institutions react to sexual assault reports, and the impact of differing reactions on victims, is important at a time when, as the researchers noted, society’s response to sexual assault nationally is shifting toward community-coordinated action, with law enforcement and community service providers increasingly working together.

Join Andrew Aleman as he focuses on LGBTQ+ terminology and elements which are fundamental to working with Survivors within these communities.  

Course learning objectives: 

1. Attendees will understand the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity

3. Attendees will be able to articulate at least 2 strategies for creating an inclusive environment

Andrew Aleman (he|him|his) is the Human Trafficking Program Coordinator for the Nebraska Coalition to Sexual and Domestic Violence. In addition to identifying within the community, Andrew is extremely involved in the LGBTQ+ community in Omaha, NE, and serves as the Co-Chair for GLSEN Omaha- An organization that focuses on safe schools for all. Prior to joining the coalition’s team, Andrew worked with LGBTQ+ individuals in multiple settings, including: therapy, case management, community organizing, etc...
